EditorialSome 20 years ago I turned to a wise older man to learn from him. He became a role model for me. One thing that made me uncomfortable was that he was a pacifist. I was not. However, over the years I have come to see that violence breeds violence. Do you remember the 2 boys who killed the toddler, Jamie Bulger? They got their inspiration from violent videos they were allowed to watch. I fear that no lessons have been learned. Children have far more access to violence now on games and the internet. I was horrified to see that Eastenders - watched by many children showed the attempted murder of a man being buried alive. The producers obviously see no link between violence on TV and violence on our streets. Gradually over the years I fear that we are becoming a more violent nation. It has not helped that we aggressively invaded first Afghanistan and then Iraq. And far from sorting out the problems, violence has only bred violence. What can Christians do? First, we need to be sure that this is an issue for us. If we enjoy violent films ourselves, then we won't get very far with our children. We need to discuss with our children why we are concerned, and to listen and learn from them. They may be in a position to change society. I hope that we at St. Aldhelm's will be hosting a youth event in early May to discourage young people in Edmonton from using guns and knives A similar event was held last year at the Methodist Church in Fore Street, and so many young people came that they need a bigger venue. The best thing about it is that it will be young people talking to young people. It is of course still a minority of young people who are taking up guns and knives. Many young people want to see their world become less violent, and believe that Jesus' teaching is the key. We have just heard again the story of Jesus arrest, trial and crucifixion. His last healing was of a man whose ear was cut by the sword of one of his disciples. Jesus said: 'All who draw the sword will die by the sword'. Let's believe that. David Bolster |
