St. Aldhelm’s newsWe were saddened to hear of the death of Jean Ward at the end of July. Although Jean worshipped at the United Reformed Church in Palmers Green she had become a member of our family here. Several went to her funeral. Silver Threads are also saddened to hear of the death of Doris Head who had been a hard working committee member for several years. As we write, the Hope 09 Mission & young people’s ‘Go Festival’ at Picketts Lock has begun. STOP PRESS! There is a closing celebration on Sunday 30th August in St. Aldhelm’s at 10.30am. New River Church have cancelled their Sunday worship to join us, and we hope to have a few join us from many of the Churches involved in the mission. The joint service last year was one of the highlights of the year. Don’t miss it, but consider bringing friends. Our Sunday morning children’s work called ‘Youth Church’ is restarting with an open morning on September 14th. Please would parents make it a priority to come.
Encouraging people of different faith backgrounds to meet each other. Dates are throughout September – see cards in Church marked Ignorance is not bliss for Dates, Times and addresses. Swine flu Most of you will now know that we have suspended the use of the common cup at Holy Communion. This flu virus is different in several ways, and can be easily passed on by hands and in liquid. You will notice that the priest will also be washing his hands and using alcohol gel before administering the bread. We would hope that we can resume wine at communion as soon as the pandemic is over.

OASIS Edith Ashley writes: “My sister and I would like to thank all who commited to this year’s Oasis. Those who organised it, the cooks, kitchen helpers, the entertainers. sure we all agree that if laughter is a tonic we had a good measure throughout the week.” Glenys writes: “I wanted to thank every single person involved with Oasis this year. I think, after speaking to so many residents and to helpers, all have the same opinion, that Oasis should carry on. It was such a pleasure to see the smiling, happy faces of all the visitors.” Glenys also thanks all who contributed to the Bring & Buy stall. Some £350 was raised for the Youth Church. . On Sunday mornings in the Autumn we shall be reading through the Acts of the Apostles, especially some of the lesser known stories. Pastors
in Enfield
PC Garret Pennery, Faith officer for Enfield writes... If you read in the Bible how the local authorities supported the Christian church in sharing their faith in a practical way, by encouraging Christians to represent the Church on the streets of the main city, then you might say to yourself “if only that was like that now”! Well, it is, and has been like that for the past few years! Being a Street Pastor is about demonstrating God’s Love by giving up one day a month, to be a visible presence on the streets of Enfield. NOT being a police officer but representing the church. Being on hand to share Hope with the community. As well as one night a month, local police often ask for Street Pastor volunteers to be in areas where serious crimes have been committed and therefore they get the opportunity to reassure our community. If
there are no Street Pastors within your church then I have to ask
the question “why not?”

New law about ‘No smoking’ The new law about no smoking in public places affects both our buildings – Church and hall. Although we cannot remember the last time when someone tried to ‘light up’ in Church – we now have to display a notice that tells them it is against the law. If we don’t display it, it is we who are breaking the law!

Join your local hospital The North Middlesex University Hospital is applying to become a Foundation Trust. By becoming a Foundation Trust, we will have greater freedoms in meeting the needs of our patients and local community. We would like local people as well as patients and their carers to become members of the Hospital. Members can get involved as much or as little as they want and membership is free. By becoming a member, it will give you the chance to show your support and loyalty for your local hospital, while helping the Hospital to develop and design services that patients, carers and the people of Enfield and Haringey want.
Members will be the first to hear about developments at the Hospital and get regular newsletters. They can also vote in elections and stand to become one of our public or patient Governors. Alongside this, we are also looking at other benefits for members, e.g. patient and public members can now use NHS Discounts scheme! Interested? Membership details in Church Office. |
